To keep a lamp burning we have to keep putting oil in it.
- Mother Teresa
The above mentioned quote is a profound statement from the lips of a great woman of compassion whose life and ministry impacted literally hundreds of thousands of needy and destitute people.
The lamp of hope that is found in the human heart does indeed need to be consistently refueled with the oil of encouragement, assurance, and hope. Without oil a brightly lit lamp soon becomes a flickering ember that quickly turns into a smoldering wick. When there is no caretaker committed to refueling a lamp, it burns out and the light it had purposed to give to the world is swallowed up in darkness.
There are many inner city boys, girls and youth who are destined to be lights that will brighten our future and enlarge our world. There is no shortage of potential in them to burn brightly! Sad to say, the shortage that causes burn out comes most often through the lack of caretakers.
At Christmas time we honor and remember the great Light that came into the world. Yet, He was not only the Light, He was also the Caretaker as we read in the Word:
“A bruised reed He will not break, and a smoldering wick He will not snuff out.” - Isaiah 42:3
“The Sovereign Lord has given me (Jesus) an instructed tongue to know the word that sustains the weary.” - Isaiah 50:4
Jesus declared that He came to the world to give life and to give it more abundantly! Today we are His hands extended to the hurting and the hopeless. Phoenix Inner City Kids (PICK) has recently simplified its mission statement to better articulate the God given purpose and vision that is our assignment. With the gospel of Jesus Christ as our highest priority, our purpose can be summed up in an acrostic of the word, HOPE.
To be available to help youth in any way needed and to provide resources when possible.
Offering opportunities to learn, to develop skills and talents, and to be exposed to new and stimulating environments and experiences.
To partner with youth and family to provide an extended family support structure.
To be a source of encouragement and to promote confidence and assurance.
PICK has been a shining light in the dark world of inner city Phoenix, spreading the love of Christ for more than 20 years. But we cannot maintain our light without caretakers adding oil to keep the flame alive. Many youth and families need us to pour into them so they will have a bright future. We need you to keep PICK’s flame alive so that we can continue to light their way!
Thank you so much for all you have done and for what we will do as we partner together. We are making a difference!
In His love,
